Oats Breakfast

Oats make a great healthy breakfast. We usually have Oats for breakfast roughly twice in a week. You can have Oats with a glass of Milk and with any of the fruits like Apple, Banana, Chikoo etc. and dry fruits like Walnuts, Figs/Anjoor, Dates etc. Unlike the corn flakes mixture, the Oats breakfast that I am suggesting here usually will not make you feel hungry till afternoon lunch.

Depending on the amount of calories you need to stay active during the morning hours, you can add or let go of certain dry fruits or the fresh fruits that I am suggesting to go with the Oats breakfast. For example, you can avoid Banana if you feel it is high in calories and you need the breakfast to stay light. Oats is a great breakfast recipe to fall back on if you have had a heavy meal the previous night, say, in a restaurant or a friend’s house. Also, we go for a quick and healthy oats breakfast when I have a larger menu to target for lunch on a festival day or when I have some visitors at home; when it is expected that we will have a heavier lunch. This saves some work for me for breakfast and jump straight into preparing the dishes for lunch.

One can prepare quite a few dishes from Oats like Oats Upma, Cookies, Soups etc. Will explore some of these oats recipes and post them in coming days.

Update: Also check out my latest post Oats Vegetable Soup Recipe for another idea for healthy Oats Breakfast.

Oats Breakfast
Oats Breakfast
Oats Breakfast Ingredients:

  • Quaker Oats – 1/2 cup (or White Oats)
  • Milk – 1-1/2 to 2 cups
  • Sugar – 1 Tbsp
  • Walnuts – 7-8
  • Fig or Anjeer or Anjoor – 1-2
  • Dates or Kajoor – 2
  • Apple – 1/2
  • Banana – 1 small sized (Optional)

Time to Make: 10 min

How To Prepare:

  1. Cut all the dry fruits like Walnuts, Fig and Dates into small pieces. Cut the fresh fruits you want to go with Oats like Apple, Banana, Chikoo etc. into cubed sized pieces.
  2. Cook the Oats with 1 cup of Milk and Sugar in a microwave for about 2-3 minutes or cook them in a vessel for about 5 minutes.
  3. Transfer the above cooked Oats with Milk to a serving bowl. Leave the mixture to cool for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Now add all the cut Fruits, Dry fruits and remaining Milk to the serving bowl with cooked Oats. Mix all the ingredients well.

Now your fresh healthy Oats breakfast is ready to savoured.

Health Notes:

  • Oatmeals can contain Wheat, Barley and Corn. Oats have lots of fiber content and is high in Protein and Iron. I hear that it has very low or zero cholesterol, zero fatty acid and is heart friendly.
  • Dry fruits like Walnuts promote good cholesterol, have lots of Proteins and unsaturated fat.
  • Dried Figs are highly nutritious and contains high calories, but it helps to fight anemia and protect against cancer.
  • Dates are high in Sugar but have no cholesterol and they are high in dietary fiber too.

  1. Hema, what a rich and healthy breakfast! I simply love to have a breakfast and can’t skip any single day. Here, your explanation is very good. Just a quick note, I assume here that you don’t mix any citrus fruit with milk, do you? Because, according to Ayurveda, it’s opposite food and caused to averse effect to our body and skin. So, I only add milk in cereals but never any citrus fruit. 🙂

    • You can use Quaker Oats or White Oats which is available in the retail stores. No other cereals need to be added here. For the recipe provided, you can use 4 tbsp or 1/2 cup of Oats (around 115 gm). Add other ingredients as directed. Hope I understand your question right. Let me know if you were looking for something else. Thanks – Hema

  2. For the last one year I am eating more or less two tablespoons of oats in milk with raisins. Your recipe seems to be good. I must try it. But do you think one must not have oats daily?

    • Shavi – Yes it is beneficial if you use Honey instead of Sugar. My cousin uses Honey instead of Sugar for Oats Breakfast. Honey is sweeter than Sugar and hence you need less of it. I have heard that Honey can be safer than Sugar for someone suffering from diabetes and may be of help in achieving weight loss.

You can prepare varieties of Oats Breakfast by adding any of the large variety of fruits and dry nuts/fruits available. But keep in mind not to use citrus fruits like Orange or Lime. Thank you for pointing this out.

  4. My daughter is only four do you think this breakfast would be too heavy for her? She does not like omelets or milk in the morning and sometimes she throws up in her school bus when I try to force feed her in the morning.

  10. hi.. thank you for such wonderful recipes..
m a college student and I need to rush for my college daily around 7 a.m… most of the times i skip breakfast as i don’t get enough time to prepare my breakfast.. so I thought of going for oats….
i have purchased quaker oats almost 2 weeks back… but had just once coz i just could not swallow the plain oats+milk+sugar… i tried your recipes and they r very nice… i loved it.. and i plan to eat oats for breakfast atleast thrice a week…

    • Supriya – I find it difficult too to manage with plain Oats. I am happy to hear that the recipes are helping you. It feels a lot healthier to have Oats breakfast than having something else outside or skipping breakfast entirely.

Recently I prepared Oats Upma and it came out really well – much better than what I expected. Will post the Oats Upma recipe too when I get time. I understand something like Upma is hard to make before 7am in the morning though. Thanks! – Hema

    • Lakshmi – The general opinion is that Oats breakfast does help weight loss. But as discussed here, some people are tempted to combine Oats breakfast with a high sugar or high calorie preparation. Be aware of this when you embark on a weight loss plan with Oats recipes.

  11. Hi, I really dont like having oats+milk…
I too want to loose weight and have a healthy breakfast so i have started having oats like poha… I mean i prepare it the way like poha.. is it ok to have that?

    • Swarna – I do not see a reason why you cannot have Oats for dinner. But if you are planning to go for Oats only dinner, I would be concerned about maintaining a balance of fiber, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals. Read through these articles on balanced diet and maintaining a healthy diet for weight loss. Do consult your doctor if you have specific questions on how you can reduce weight.

  12. You say that Oats contain Wheat Barley and Corn? What do you mean? Are they not separate grains? Or are you refering to a specific brand of Oatbran cereal? Also adding Cinnamon adds flavor to bland recipes and good for diabetics too. Thanks Hema.

    • Raj – As you suggest, Oats, Barley, Wheat and Corn are all separate food grains. I do not remember the context presently but I was probably referring to an Oatmeal brand that had a mixture of these cereals. Have updated the post to reflect this. Nice to know about taste provided by Cinnamon and its benefits – have not tried it myself and will do. Thanks for pointing this out.

    • Sudhir – Certainly Oats, Barley, Corn and Wheat are all different grains. It’s been some time since this Oats recipe was posted; do not remember the context – I probably had a version of Oatmeal in mind. Thanks for pointing this out. Have corrected the post for this information.

  13. i love this breakfast because its filled with a lots of fibers and my son doesn’t like Oats can you just suggest me some breakfast for kids

  14. I’m aged 30, 6 feet and 64kg. I started eating oats breakfast. I learnt , I’m not feeling full, instead I feel empty after having breakfast n I feel hungry just after an hour of eating. Please help.
Should oats be taken only for breakfast?
I’m on reducing weight. What should I consider for lunch and dinner?

    • Meher – Your weight does not seem too high for your height and age. Anyway, it’s natural to feel hungry early after having Oats Breakfast depending on the person’s constitution of course. You can combine Oats Breakfast with Oats Soup or Oats Upma(have posted those recipes in this blog). Oats can be consumed at any time of the day. The kind of Oats dishes you can prepare is limited only by your imagination. See here for some examples. For weight loss, I would suggest you to consult a dietitian and also scan the web for some help as you can read here. People who have gone through similar situation can be of much greater help than me. Wish you the best for your weight loss program.

  15. I am taking breakfast plain oats in the morning with adding sugar and milk. How will it work – whether i can feel the weight loss. Regards/jaculin

  16. Hi Hema Mam..Actually today I bought Quaker Oats..But I do not know how to cook it. My weight is 58kg. I want to reduce my weight. I am looking very fat. Pls help me. If any recipes with oats in reducing weight pls email me.

  17. Hi Hema,

I would like to start having oats for breakfast. Can you sugges me how to start with & kindly let me know what all receips can be prepared with oats? Can i have oats with milk daily for breakfast?
    Awaiting for your revert.

    Thanks,
    Jatin

  18. It is nutritious dish but adding such dry fruits will not be beneficial to reduce the weight. Can you suggest any other spicy Oat dish?

    • Dr.Arti – Instead of adding Sugar, you can add honey to this Oats Breakfast and also dry fruits like Badam/Almonds, Raisins, Walnuts and Figs have relatively little to zero unhealthy saturated fat in them. In fact, some studies have suggested nutrition rich nuts like Almonds can aid weight loss when consumed daily in moderation and they are nutrient dense. Hence I suggested that we add these dry fruits to this Oats breakfast dish.

But if you want to try out something spicy, you may try other Oats recipes posted in this blog – Oats Upma, Oats Idli and easy to make Oats Vegetable Soup.

  19. Which Quaker Oat product should I use?
please specify in detail. Its first time for me to make Oat Breakfast.
I can see various types of Quaker oats product.

  20. Hi Hema – Just read your views, really impressed. I am 28 years old and 85kgs and I am 6ft tall, do you think I am overweight? Any way I am following your recipe from tomorrow. Pls let me know if you have different ways to lose weight. Thanks a ton…

  22. Hello Hema,
I’m new in using oats, I just bought it today after work.
    I don’t know what it tastes like .. I’m afraid I won’t like it. but I’m gonna give it a try 😀
I’m only considering it because I want to change my breakfast routine a little bit and also I’m having lots of migraines and some food do trigger it alot.
so my Question to you, some dry fruits trigger migraine and banana has lots of Calories. what should I put in my oats breakfast dish besides Apples??
    thanksss :))

  23. Hi Hema,

I tried out your two recipes namely; oats/rava idli and akki roti. Both turned out very well. Thanks a lot. I recommended your site to my daughter and sister and they both liked it. Further, whenever I try new recipes from your site I will do let you know. Thanks once again.

  24. To add some variety in taste of the Oats-Milk-Sugar combo, try dissolving some chocolates or toffees in the milk before adding Oats.

  25. Hi Hema,
I try Oats Upma and it was very easy to cook in a short time and it was very good in taste too. Every member of my family loved it just because of your recipe.Thanx a lot.

  26. Hi Hema,
Looking on all the above comments about Oats made me feel relaxed as I thought I am preparing it in wrong way and its not tastin ggood. Anyways i wud like to know like oats are there any other products for breakfast for good health..as variety is the spice of life.

  27. Hellos Hema,

I am looking for a simple recipe of oats…..you know boys dont like to carry too many things in office.

I am just planning to have oats with boil water as few spicy oats are available in the market.

Can you please let me know if I prepare oats with boil water only..

Will this help to reduce weight ?

    Thanks

  28. Hi Hema.. I give oats to my one year old (either made sweet or salty) almost thrice a week. I loved your recipes and would definitely try these also. Thanks 🙂

  29. Hi Hema. This is my first visit to your blog and landed here while looking for dishes with oats. I am a huge fan of oats and your oats breakfast looks very tempting. You have a nice blog 🙂

  30. Excellent web site you’ve got here.. It’s hard to find good quality writing like yours nowadays.

I honestly appreciate people like you! Take care!
    !

    • You can use water to cook oats instead of Milk and add the other ingredients. Or if you want spicy version, you can use Jeera or cumin seeds & add Buttermilk instead of milk.

  31. Started having oats with 1 cup milk and 1/4 tsp honey with one almond and 4 raisins thrown in. Is this a good substitute for normal dinner?

    • Sorry for the late reply Gungun. Yes, the best way to avoid the sugar is the honey and it helps you to reduce the weight also. Almond and Raisins are good. Almond has 0% cholesterol.
