Bendekai Palya or Bhindi Sabzi

One of the most common palya/poriyal/sabjis widely popular in South India for dinner/lunch. Ladies Finger Okra palya/sabzi is typically served with Chapathi or plain rice.

Ladies Finger Okra Palya/Poriyal Ingredients:

  • Ladies Finger/Bendekai/Okra – 20
  • Oil – 3 tsp
  • Mustard Seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Urad Dal / White Lenthils – 1/4 tsp
  • Red chillies – 1 (Optional)
  • Curry leaves – 7-8
  • Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Salt
  • Red Chilly powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Garam Masala Powder – 1/2 tsp

How to Prepare:

Wash and wipe the Ladies Finger with clean cloth (Just to avoid the stickiness of the ladies finger while cutting). Discard the ends of the Bhindi by cutting them off.

Cut the Bhindi/Ladies Finger into small pieces.

In a frying pan, pour Oil and heat the same. Add Mustard seeds, Urad dal and fry for a minute. Then add Red chillies and Curry leaves.

Now add cut Ladies Finger and Turmeric powder and fry in oil until the Bhindi turns soft and the sticky portion disappears. At this stage, add Salt, Chilli Powder and Garam masala. Stir for 3-4 min in medium flame and turn off the flame.

Now Bendekai Palya/Poriyal or Ladies Finger Sabji is ready to be served with Chapati or with plain rice.
